Beautiful ripe local tomatoes on sale last weekend at the greengrocers in East Wittering, West Sussex.
Drive round the back road of The Witterings, Earnley and Sidlesham and as summer progresses more and more wooden benches appear at the road side or propped up against wooden gates laden with local produce for sale. All for a small sum to be left in the honesty box.
Both the sight and flavour of which take you back to another era.

Aaaah, the Witterings. As a native of West Sussex, I am quite familiar with the abundance of tomatoes. My dad used to grow them successfully on the sandy soil of the greensand ridge that runs through the Weald. Light and easy to cultivate, the soil lends itself to sun-loving plants. There, the secret was lots of cow manure, dug deep. The tomatoes, well staked, were delicious. I came home from school and challenged the pigeons in the pea rows and then finished off in the tomatoes. Dessert was a wander amongst the gooseberries. Nothing like a bit of sentimental flashbacking…..
