Ananas Noir, Black Zebra, Essex Wonder,

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Ananas Noir: Plants of Distinction who list the seed describe it as originally from Belgium, multicoloured fruit ( green, yellow, purple). Flesh is curiously green with deep red streaks and has an outstanding flavour.

Black Zebra: I found a description of this as being a cross between Green Zebra and a black tomato. Which apparently gives it a complex, sweet and smoky taste. Which now, back to “choice” from the shelves of the supermarket, is the kind of tomato taste which haunts my dreams!

Essex Wonder: This is a classic tomato. It doesn’t look much here but I think at one time this was THE tomato to grow. Originally bred by Dobies.

Hello – Essex Wonder was a really popular and much grown tomato up to about 1950 or so…. it then seems to have slowly dropped off of seed suppliers lists. The only place I have found it listed is as part of the Seed Heritage Library/Garden Organic organisation but to buy it from them you have to become a member – they have quite a few “forgotten” veg so it might make a nice present for someone – but the seeds aren’t avaliable from them in the normal way. I put a link to their list of vegetables if you want to find out more.

On the other hand the good news is that there are so many wonderful tomatoes to choose from now that hopefully your wife can find an equally delicious alternative that’s readily avaliable! I hope you have fun choosing – and enjoying your summer tomatoes!
