And now there are no tomatoes…

by Sally on February 25, 2011

Is there any good news around at the moment? I am sure there must be some somewhere – but it’s certainly being squeezed out by the bad and ugly.

I thought I might find light relief in the world of tomatoes – but if you are in the US and enjoy a slice or two of tomato in your sandwich or salad, then even that small pleasure is off the menu. At some places gone completely – others, it’s tomato by special request only. Freezing temperatures in Florida and Mexico earlier this year caused crops to be ruined – and now supply is either short – and as a result prices have more than tripled.

I’ve a feeling I’m going to appreciate the taste of home-grown more than ever this year. Both for flavour and for the luxury of time spent in a peaceful corner of the globe.
