And The Winner Is….

Gold goes to Sungold

I’ve decided there’s only one ‘can’t live without it‘ tomato and that’s Sungold.

Its flavour, colour, prolific crop and yes even its unruly ways were endearing.

Sungold behaves like a gangly, hormonal teenage but delivers like an elite echelon of the Woman’s Institute  engaged in a fruit cake bake off.

So does that mean that none of the others will be here again next year ?

Not necessarily.

Alicante, Moneymaker, Gardeners Delight, Garden Pearl, Tumbler and Roma all did what tomatoes are meant to do. Produce tasty red tomatoes in standard, cherry or paste varieties.

But not in such a charming, compelling way that I don’t think there’s something  else out there that couldn’t take their place.

Black Cherry, Tigerella, Darby Stripe, Cream Sausage and Carbon are a harder act to follow. If you’re looking for tomatoes with charisma these have it.

So I’m going to put them to the comparison test. I’m going to look for benchmark tomatoes to replace them and if Icome across a variety I think looks like it has the T factor I’ll try that instead.

If not these 5 will be back again in 2010.

How do you decide what to grow each year ?

Tried and tested or ring in the changes ?
