But they do do tomatoes as well !
Started 24 years ago and based in Warminster, Wiltshire, I came across this private herb nursery for the first time at this year’s London RHS Autumn show. On their stand they have a lovely deep box of bean seeds with the invitation to plunge your hands in and let the beans run through your fingers- very moreish! What they don’t have is a catalogue – it’s all on-line. Except for ordering – which is by post. P&P is £1.75. ( and if you have trouble clicking around the site – go to the site index, bottom left hand side, and click from there – I needed those calming beans to chill me out, when I was clicking and nothing was happening.)
Anyway enough admin – on to the tomaotes . All organic, all open-pollinated. 12 varieties listed in alphabetical order:
- Beefsteak/Chadwick/Cherry Fox/ Gardener’s Delight/Mascokta/Marmande/Matina/Moneymaker/San Marzano/Yellow Brandywine/Red Brandywine/Yellow Pear.
Today’s photo is of Yellow Pear – and I don’t think it would be an overly precocious prediction to say it’s a variety that might be appearing on a certain tomato blog in 2011. The colour, the shape; there’s something about it that reminds me of blowing up ballons, when you get to that halfway point and need to stop to get that extra puff to fill it to its full shape ( though clearly the people who named it decided to go with the slightly simpler pear – as opposed to semi-inflated balloon).
