Beefmaster, Belriccio & Big Boy

by Sally on October 27, 2010

Is there some rule that beefsteak variety names have to begin with B ?

How did the beefsteaks do ?

Beefmaster and Big Boy were grown from seed and Belriccio was a grafted plant which came as a plug – a ‘pot-ready plant’ from Suttons.

Beefmaster did what it said on the packet – a dense meaty tomato with flavour, good for stuffing and cooking. It won’t make it through to next year – but only ‘cos I want to see what other hunks await !

Belriccio didn’t quite do what it said on the packet. It’s a very attractive tomato, almost too pretty to be a beefsteak ? And perhaps that’s what my beef is  – it didn’t quite pack the weighty punch I expect from a beefsteak. Nor did I manage to get it to perform well enough to be the heavy cropper it should have been either. So a winner in beauty but not  in brawn and not back for 2011.

Big Boy Another big, red round but without the pleats. A charming enough fellow but not enough stand-outness to be back.
