Just this one variety to go before tomorrow’s round-up of 2010; along with the adieus, the good lucks to those who have to audition for a place in next year’s line-up and the cheery see-you-soons to those who will be back; same time, same place, next year.
So where does Black Cherry belong ? I’ve grown it for the past 2 years. And I’m very fond of it. Yes, the skins split a lot. But, it has a great appearance and wonderful flavour. I think it’s going to go in the possible pile. I know there are other ‘dark’ cherries to choose from – and I’d like to see if I can identify one with the flavour but without the splitting problem. I’m already feeling like that’s the wrong call – so I know I’m going to be demanding of anything I consider as its replacement !
Anyway tomorrow I shall try and summarise my selections – without changing my mind !

B.C. split for me too, although my slack watering regime may have been partly responsible. I found though, that removing fruits before they were fully ripened seemed to solve this problem. Then again, quite a few G.D.s split too, so I’m more inclined to blame my watering than the varieties.
There’s a variety called ‘Brown Berry’ aka Chocodel, and a hybrid called ‘Cherrola’ available from Nicky’s Nursery.
Thank you for the ‘Brown Berry’ recommendation – I’ve got quite a few of my seeds from Nicky’s Nursery – and always enjoy browsing through the choice – so will go and have a closer look.
