Some that are nearly there !
There are distinct phases to tomato growing.
The waiting ,waiting bit, the anynow day now bit, the something finally seems to be happening bit, the that’s more like it bit, the it’s all taking off bit, the what do I do with all this bit and the best bit – the bit between your teeth bit !
August especially, seems to be the month when tomato growers get to experience the bits before the bites !
Over at From Seed to Table the bit where you wait patiently as your beautiful tomatoes linger on green .
Over at the LondonVegetableGarden , the moment you’ve been waiting for bit when a tomato turns red .
Followed by the get the scales out and start weighing your bounty, especially if your pickings include a bonny 1lb 30z Brandywine.
And then it’s time to get busy , picking 11 kilos of tomatoes or picking and making 10 pints of tomato sauce.
But throughout the one constant is, you must worry.
Princess Nebraska sums it up perfectly !

Great tomato pictures! Are those Cherokee Purple in the first photo? They look yummy….
Hello Sally,
Your photos look very familiar, I started my plants a bit later than most of yours but like you it took for me to go away for the weekend before something happened. I’ve come back to ripening tomatoes, all shapes and sizes, there’s one beefsteak (marmande) which is ginourmous, mozarella and avocado at the ready!
I’m having to get creative in order to support my vines which are drooping under the weight of the fruit. In fact I am a bit worried that some of the plants won’t be able to stand it for much longer – a lesson to be learned for next year.
Hello Nick,
I’m delighted yours have turned the red corner ! And I completely agree with your theory about going away. I went away to all green and lo and behold the 1st ripe one was there when I got back.
What’s interesting about timing is I sowed mine at intervals but they seem to ripen by variety not by sowing batch.
I have the same issue with support esp with the Carbons. Luckily where they fall but bend and not break they seem to keep going .
Enjoy your salad !
Hello,
Thank you for getting in touch.
Those are Black Cherry which I have heard so many good tasting reports on. But it’s slow to ripen so I am still waiting.
There are tiny little green shoulders on those 3 so I was waiting but greed may get the better of me ! The rest of the plant is still green. So lots of anticipation.
