Easter Tomato Seeds. Update.

by Sally on April 17, 2009

6 days ago I planted my Easter tomato seeds. The last tomato seeds for 2009.
5 Garden Pearl seeds in a 10cm pot and 5 Tumbler seeds in a quarter (20cm) seed tray.
They’ve been as busy getting going as I’ve been peeling foil off chocolate!

Yesterday there were 4 shoots of Tumbler and 1 of Garden Pearl.

Today there are 4 go-getting Tumbler shoots and 3 smaller Garden Pearl shoots.

The compost is still moist so no watering required yet. I have taken the cling film off the seed tray containing the Tumbler seedlings but am keeping the polythene bag over the Garden Pearl for today.

I love this part of the seed growing process. All that peering for days when nothing seems to be happening (well on the surface!) and then suddenly….. there’s life and then it all happens so fast!

Since sowing my first tomato seeds I’ve gained a new technical term – the hypocotyl. The dictionary definition is….

that part of the axis of a plant which is between the cotyledons and the primary root”

Translated that’s the small white loop that first emerges from the compost and is the cause of much excitement !

Did you have time to sow tomato seeds last weekend? And if so how are they doing?  How are your levels of hypocotyl induced happiness ?
