Floridity, Gardeners Delight, Rosada

by Sally on October 26, 2010

All good tomatoes. In shape, Floridity is a mini-plum, Gardeners Delight round and Rosada a sort of squashed, slightly clumsy shape, somewhere between the two. All are red and have good flavour. So what does it all add up to ?

Floridity is a possible. I like the shape, colour and flavour. And all those three qualities mean it brings a certain something to salads. So if no other nicely shaped mini-plum can promise more, it will return…

Gardeners Delight. What to do ? I wasn’t going to grow it this year, as nice as it is, it seems too straightforward. But then I kept seeing it written up everywhere by everyone (and possibly his tomato-eating Portugese Water Dog ) as an all-time favourites. So when I saw plants for sale I bought them.  And as I’ve a feeling I could go through exactly the same process next year – I may just as well come out and declare it in from the start ! (and for those who may be troubled by the continuing lack of an apostrophe – I don’t think in its official variety name it possesses one (!) – so I’ve never added it – and so I thought I’d better share that before putting you through another year of wondering !)

Rosada. Another great tomato. Good colour, flavour, only its shape is slightly against. But that’s really only nit-picking.  This is a tomato I’d be very happy to grow again but in my quest to keep adding to my tomato collection – won’t . But would recommend if new to you.

I’m going to grow G.D. again from saved seeds and cuttings if they take. I’m not going to argue about grammar with you; you’ll probably find all three versions used liberally and I’ve no idea which is correct.

I have another plan – I have saved some seeds from ‘Sunstream’, a large mini-plum type sold by Tesco. ‘Sunstream’ might well be a hybrid, which could provide some interesting results. That will be my ‘experimental’ variety.

I like a plan ! I know from comments left by other readers that they had great success with ‘Murano’ from Tesco – with the fruit of their saved seeds being just as delicious as the shop bought fruit. Well now will be the time to start testing all the supermarket fruits ! I’ll have to find one to ‘adopt’ as well in the spirit of experimentation !
