These are the Suncherry and Sungold seedlings – 24 HOURS – after I took Friday’s shot of them. In that short period of time they shot up that much!
And then here’s where the Pellet sown seedling are at today.
Whilst lovely to see them all germinate and get going – it’s also the time when I look – and think – really? is it really possible you’re going to be my tomato source (and sauce) in a few months time? It requires suspension of disbelief this growing business…

Yay for germination and growth, ain’t nature wonderful?
My first to emerge are ‘Sunstream’, which I noticed had poked their leaves into daylight yesterday. Also, some ‘Black Cherry’ and ‘G.D.’ have made appearances today. Still waiting upon the others, though i’m not holding my breath for the aged ‘M.K.’s…
Go us! In no time, those tiny, spindly stems will be thick and hairy, and topped with scented leaves (I love the smell – how about you?). The ones I sowed and transplanted first (March 8th) are so big now – proper little plants – and I can actually believe they’ll be ready to go into the (yet-to-be-built) greenhouse in two-three weeks’ time. It’s such an exciting process! I just wish it wasn’t such a rush – I’ve another 60 waiting to be potted up, and nowhere for them to go!
Great news! The ones with Sun in the variety names all seem to want an early start! Early risers the lot! And perhaps that explains the tardiness of Market King – it’s just taking longer to wake up after it’s very long slumber – after all it’s going to get a bit of a shock when it does – the tomato equivalent of that TV programme Life on Mars !
I am doing my maths – and if you have another 60 to pot up – I think that must take you to well over 300! My awe continues to grow as fast as your plants! I do love the smell – so much so that a very thoughtful friend once bought me a tomato room spray! It doesn’t deliver in quite the same way as the real thing – but nice idea! I think lots of people’s first garden memories are of being in a greenhouse with a parent or grandparent and the fragrance of “eau de tomate” !
I am glad to hear you have proper little plant – it’s great when they get their real leaves as opposed to the standard issue seed leaves!
