Growing Tomatoes. Week 25.

week 25

A low key week. I’ve held off picking too much in the hope of  holding out for sun to add an extra burst of summer sweetness to the remaining tomatoes.

The garden is also beginning to a look tatty. Taking lots of leaves off might help protect the plants from nasties but does nothing for their looks.

Postioned round the garden the skeletal stalks laden with heavy red fruit evoke a drawing room full of bony dowagers, all trying to out do each other with inherited bling and breeding but bowing under the weight of their heavy heirloom jewels.

This is my haul this week:

3 sept 09

1.86 kg

4 sept 09

1.2 kg

5 sept 09

732 g

6 sept 09

972 g

Over at Our Engineered Garden the tomato glut, sauce and salsa making has prompted the need for a break at the beach – wonderful idea ! Interesting tip on picking Roma before it gets really red. It’s such a pretty scarlet colour that I have been holding off but time to pick and get my biggest pan out for a tomato sauce production line.

And feeling wistful, knowing time is being called on the English tomato season , it’s great to pop over to The Conservative Gardener and see vibrant healthy plants – all 19 varieties and 68 of them, being planted out !
