Yesterday evening , me and curry buddy, Jane were taking a pre-dansak hike through the tomato trail that is now my back garden, playing spot the baby tomato ( prize spot – 3 little green Carbon pincushions ) whilst lamenting that my tomato enjoyment is still all in the anticipation and not yet in a salad !
Next year starting earlier under glass will be a way to overcome this but as well as plotting a greenhouse purchase it also made me think about my chosen varieties and what impact they might be having on H (harvest) Day .
Tomatoes fall into one of three season varieties.
Early, Main or Middle and Late season. Early, Main/Middle or Late refer to the number of days between transplanting tomato plants and picking that 1st ripe tomato.
For early season tomatoes this number of days will be 50 to 65 days.
For main/middle season tomatoes this number of days will be 66 to 79 days.
For late season tomatoes this number of days will be 80 to 100 days.
So the difference between a very early and a very late tomato can be as much as 50 days. Yikes !
I’m off to do a lot of counting on fingers and will report back on how long, for each of my varieties, till the big red H appears on the tomato calendar.
Todays’ pictures of the much awaited Carbon fruit and the ever growing banger that is the Cream Sausage.
