A c0uple of weeks ago tomatoes were caught up in Mafia machinations. Now it’s “bootlegging” in India. In “dry” Ahmedabad (India) juice is extracted from the tomato by syringe and replaced with a mix of whisky and crushed sleeping pills! Sounds like a recipe for disaster but according to the stories here and here it is making buying and eating tomatoes even more joyful than normal!

I’d like to try it without the sleeping tablets! The 2nd link doesn’t seem to work.
I know – it’s not a great sounding combination is it?! A sort of “suicide salad”! I’ve had vodka “pumped” cherry tomatoes -they were good – so I think a little more chi-chi cocktail partyness and a little less of the whiff of a cyanide pill would be my preferred “poison”! Makes me grateful I can just go to the supermarket and put a punnet of tomatoes and a bottle of wine in my basket and not have to work out how to disguise one inside the other!
I’ve re done the 2nd link so I think it should work now!
thanks for redoing the link … there’s a funny ad that pops up for a website called shaadi.com (the world’s largest matrimonial service) which I forwarded to an indian mate of mine whose family is trying to find him a bride!! He thought it was hysterical.
Well – if he finds her – then I hope that Liqueur Tomatoes have pride of place on the canape menu !!!
And just as a quick ps – I was standing in the Q at Lidl – where they always have a few different products to the usual supermarket offerings – and they had packets of little chocolate easter eggs but filled with whiskey…now I have no idea why it should feel wrong to add alcohol to an easter egg filling – but it just did!! There is just something about all that bright yellow foil – and chick and bunny motifs – that for me doesn’t quite sit right with “pimping” them up with scotch! So now I am thinking but is it more or less wrong than scotch filled tomatoes…. and then of course all I can then think about is Scotch Eggs – which are always a nice treat now and again! But something entirely different….!
If you had kids it would be a good way to keep them quiet over Easter! I used to love ‘stealing’ liqueur chocolates from my parents when I was a kid – biting off the chocolate end and swigging out the alcohol and feeling rather grown-up … such a lovely memory! P’raps I’ll have to try the whisky filled easter eggs. I agree about Scotch Eggs – a lovely treat … a friend of mine makes them and puts mustard between the egg and sausage meat which gives them a real kick.
