October Gardening Magazines

October Magazines

I’d completely forgotten about Octobers’ Gardening Magazines – they’ve probably been on the shelves for a couple of weeks now.

However the lack of interest seems to be mutual. Tomato related articles are in hibernation.  There are a couple of quick mentions on getting the most from plant which still bear unpicked fruit. Recommendations are either to cut down and take the stalk of a whole plant and hang it up somewhere dry, warm and light . ( I can see this would work well with determinate or hanging basket types as you could just cut shorter cascades to hang) or with the plant still in its growing position lie it down on a bed of straw or fleece and cover with a cloche.

Non tomato topics covered include lots on fruit, composting and leaf mould, how to keep growing through the winter months and a couple on seed saving – which is a good reminder to add this to my to do list before the last of this year’s crop gets eaten !

In Kitchen Garden there was also a visit to Audley End in Essex which I didn’t make it to this year but is on my list of Tomato Lover Days Out for 2010.
