Yesterday in response to news of the positive effect eating tomato can have on a dull red wine, I asked if there was no end to the talents of the tomato.
Turns out there is ….a little ironically as it happens; it appears it can’t be made into a decent bottle of wine.
Dreamt up in the 70s, the tasting notes from the Guernsey Tomato Marketing Board read ‘pretty awful’ and ‘very disappointing’.
If that wasn’t conclusive enough, the founder of the Guernsey Tomato Museum made 250 gallons of souvenir Tomato Wine and still had to admit it ‘didn’t taste too good’.
I’ve no idea if the wine contributed to the demise of the Tomato Museum. (I can’t find it listed; the Telephone Museum however is still alive and ringing.)
But if tasting is believing and you want to try it for yourself the article on the BBC website includes a tomato wine recipe .
