Pomona and San Marzano

by Sally on October 22, 2010

These varieties were bought as sturdy, robust Seeds of Italy pot-ready plants. So they came from good quality stock… did they fly the flag for Italy ?

Yes and No.

San Marzano. Once over the blossom-end rot saga; this variety went on to be productive . And made itself very useful in the kitchen. I would choose it over Roma which I grew last year. But will I choose it again this year? Yes or close to it. Seeds of Italy have some variations on the San M. theme, so if I buy seeds and not plants, which gives a greater choice, then I might stray – but not far.

There is nothing amiss with Pomona but as a largish red standard it would have to be really amazing to reappear. So I’m afraid it’s …arrivederci .
