This has nothing to do with the lovely sandwich… sorry. I just went out and bought a new hoe and then found myself thinking: “That’s going to make the tomatoes expensive per fruit.” Then I wondered, with a thought as dreadful as damping off, “I wonder if Tomato Lover has been adding up total costs since the propagator and the seeds and the pots and the compost and the canes and… and… and…
Yes, Iknow that the taste, the glory, the sumptuousness of home-grown makes it all worth while, no matter what the cost, but just out of interest, starting from scratch before you can offset by using the stuff again in ensuing years…. HOW MUCH PER TOMATO by the end of the summer? This sandwich is going to be diamond quality, perhaps. What is the secret, then, of making home-grown a ‘value’ product? Anyone know? Must rush out and gather some more free sheep shit……
It’s a very good question ! I watched a few of the Monty Hall programmes from Scotland. He went Mackerel fishing and eventually after several trips of coming home empty handed caught a few. He then totted up the cost of those fish – he had had to buy a boat, the diesel etc. They were probably the most expensive fish in the world . The sums on my tomato growing might reveal similar ! But at the end of the summer depending on how many tomatoes I get I will do the maths !
