Sowing Bush Varieties In Situ ?

by Sally on March 18, 2010

Can Bush/Determinate Tomato varieties be approached differently to Cordon/Indeterminate varieties?

Yes is the answer when it comes to staking, pinching out side shoots and eventually the growing tip. Unlike high maintenance Cordons, Bush varieties need none of the above.

And then today I read advice I’ve not come across before specifically aimed at Bush varieties. Rather than starting them off in modules/trays and transplanting them to their cropping position after hardening off etc.  Instead, wait till late spring and sow in situ. I.e. directly into their cropping position. The instructions were to place the seed 2.5 cm down and cover up with seed compost and a cloche.
Bush varieties do mature earlier so maybe that’s behind the thinking. But it would still seem to delay sowing by longer than would seem right.

Bush varieties include Legend (blight resistant), Marmande, Roma and Tornado. And as I have Legend this year perhaps I’ll try a couple this way and see what happens with timings and growth.
