How To Sow Tomato Seeds Using Flowerpots.

by Sally on March 20, 2009

So onto the most traditional looking (well to me!) container for sowing my tomato seeds in. The flowerpot!

My pots are 7.5 cm in diameter so according to my research that seems the right size for 5 seeds each.

I follow the same process as with the Grow Pots. Fill with compost to within 1 cm of the rim. Then tap the pots to level the compost off. I think this is so the compost settles but air can still circulate round the seeds and the roots when they grow. Firming down too much can compress the air out of the compost. This makes sense. I love how silky and light the seed compost is. Having seen how small the tomato seeds are I can now appreciate the  need for them to be sown in something very light in order to grow and push through, upwards for the stem and downward for the roots.

I leave the pots in a roasting tin with water in the base for about 45 minutes and when the compost is moist all the way through again cover with a layer of vermiculite (about 2 dessert spoons per pot) and then spritz to moisten.

With that all my seeds are now sown and in the propagator.
The wait begins! Will they germinate?

Do you grow multiple tomato seeds in flowerpots? And if so why do you favour this method over the types of containers that avoid the need for pricking out?
