This is the 2nd part in a two part post on sowing tomato seeds over this long Easter weekend.
Today is the step by step guide on how to sow the seeds. Yesterday’s post has the list of everything you’ll need.
Sowing the tomato seeds
- Fill the pot or seed tray with compost. Crush or pick out any hard lumps or stray twigs. Fill the pot to about 1cm short of the rim. Gently tap the compost filled container on your work surface to settle the compost into place and even out the surface with your fingers. Don’t press down on it as this will push out the air. Seeds need air as well as compost and moisture.
- Write the variety of tomato on the label and pop into the pot
Place the 5 tomato seeds on the surface of the compost. Space out evenly, not to close to the edge and leaving 3cm or more between the seeds. - Cover the seeds with a thin (½ cm) layer of compost.
- Place the container in the tray containing the tepid water. Let it sit there until the water works its way through to the surface of the compost. This took under 10 minutes for the shallower seed tray but I ended up leaving the pot for about 30 minutes. When it is done you should see signs of moisture on the compost surface.
You might want to leave the containers just to drain off. - Cover the tray or pot with cling film or a polythene bag secured with an elastic band. This stops the pots from drying out whilst the seeds are germinating.
- Put the container on a warm window sill or find a warm spot (conservatory or airing cupboard). It’s warmth (18°c to 20°c) rather than light that the seeds need at this stage). (I’ve used a propagator to date but want to see what happens without one for these Easter weekend seeds.)
Although with the weather this weekend I’m struggling to find a spot in the house that meets these requirements. Either for the seeds or myself ! Still there’s no need to worry about melting easter eggs !
So now we have to wait and see what happens. I will be posting on my progress. Let me know how you get on. It would be great to compare notes !
Have fun sowing and wishing you a Happy Easter weekend.
