Although Tomatolover is given over to us home growers I thought I’d feature a couple of news stories featuring folk for whom growing tomatoes is work. Although by the looks of things – they love their work and tomatoes!
The first story features not only tomatoes but the Isle of Wight – it would be hard to find the yoking of two things that could please me more – I love the IOW – standing on top of the downs on a sunny day, sea on all sides… it can’t be beaten… and in such circumstances there isn’t much to do except stop for a flask of tea, a cheese and tomato sandwich, all washed down with a view of heaven on earth….
And what I learnt from this article is that Wight Salads who are based on the island are the largest independent organic producers of tomatoes in Europe…all that perfection in an area just 23 by 13 miles!
At first read – less bijou – are these Dutch growers – but so pleased are they with their very glossy new vine tomato- and it does look good – that they describe it as a gem and have called it Diamantino – and then cracked open the champagne to celebrate….which is exactly what I did when I got to pick and eat my first home grown tomato 2 summers ago…
So today I’ll happily raise a glass to all tomatoes growers – home and pro….
