The Yellows

by Sally on October 19, 2010

I had three different hues of this happy shade this year. Lemon Tree, Snowberry and Yellow Balconi.

One is a definite returner and that’s Yellow Balconi. I don’t like the plants themselves – they are small, fleshly leaved determinates that aren’t very attractive. BUT – so productive, take up such little space and require no care.  For minimum effort and maximum greed – this is a great variety.

The same could absolutely not be said of Lemon Tree. It truly sucked ! Not many fruits and the few that developed weren’t good. And yet …. I am going to try it again next year . It’s an attractive fruit and I just want to know if I can do better with it second time around !

Snowberry would be more deserving but there’s not room to keep everything and try new…. so that’s the only reason I’m not sowing it again next year. But it would be in my ‘ tomato lover recommends’ list.

I haven’t quite made up my mind about next year’s varieties either. I think ‘Snowberry’ or ‘Yellow Balconi’ would be a good cherry choice for a colour change from ‘Gardener’s Delight’ and ‘Black cherry’; both IMO excellent varieties themselves. So many varieties, so little time… :-)

It’s a shame that ‘Lemon Tree’ was a disappointment; I take it you tried a more ripened fruit and were still unimpressed. I wasn’t taken with ‘Lettuce Leaf’ at first, but allowing it to ripen further gives it a whole new complex flavour.

Last night, we had the first frost of the season. I rapidly dug up and potted my chilli plants, which are now impressive sizes. The toms survived the night and I’ve removed all the viable fruit for ripening indoors. But I think tonight will be a heavier frost and the plants, some still bearing hopeful flowers, are about to succumb to Nature’s axe.

Ah well. It’s been a good year. :-)

Very weird you should mention Gardeners Delight and Black Cherry – should they feature next year or not ! I am caught on the very same truss of a dilemma ! Neither Yellow Balconi or Snowberry nice though they are, are as knockout as either of those two. So I’d like to have at least one of those two winners back – but Yellow Balconi is very useful for its golden goose approach to laying ! By the end of next week I will declare my hand !

Frost has arrived here as well. It’s not hit the ground in the garden as it’s fairly protected but the shed roof has had a Christmas card roof sparkle to it !
