Three Cherries Red

by Sally on September 9, 2010

More variety dissecting. Today, under knife and scrutiny are :

Apero, Conchita and Gardeners Delight; the three indeterminate, red cherries from 2010′s line up.

Apero is sweet with a slightly tart ending – which I quite liked. What I wasn’t so keen on was the separating off of the tomato skin during eating. Childhood repulsion for the skin on hot milk  (two main offenders: weetabix and left-to-cool drinking chocolate) has left me with a big yuck factor on unexpected sloughing !

Conchita is a Sutton’s grafted variety. Milder, softer flavour, tougher skin to bite through but stayed put ! Not the most exciting of tomatoes.

Gardeners Delight. Refreshing and sweet, good skin texture. My favourite of the three as tasted against each other.

Having said that I wouldn’t want to say my tastings are definitive. I do have a little routine: sips of water between varieties, notes after each individual variety on the first round, then a second taste-off round and then a final round with ground sea salt added. But given I’m convinced my taste buds nodded off after years of covering school food with ‘brown sauce’ in a taste-masking exercise and have yet to fully wake-up again, these are only my preferences. Along with variable factors such as one tomato might be riper than another etc which will affect things as well.

However, it helps me in next year’s decision making !
