Tomato Curry

There’s a nip and a bang in the air tonight so the perfect opportunity to give Tomatoes the Winter warming treatment.

I have the most delicious curry house within easy reach of home so have never seen the need to settle for 2nd best with homemade. Which may account for the fact the rice I pulled out of the cupboard gave up the ghost last October according to its BBE date.

But in his book the kitchen diaries Nigel Slater has a recipe for Tomato Curry I’ve wanted to try for ages so today I did without the poppadums, chutneys and icy cold Cobra and made my own.

Fried onion, garlic and chilli are joined by brown mustard seeds, ground tumeric, cumin seeds and ginger and then some water and tomatoes are added in the form of tinned plus whole fresh ones which simmer away until soft but not completely mushy…. think spicy, red apple bobbing.

Served with a dollop of yoghurt on the side.

And the verdict – nice but not nice enough to warrant getting in another packet of rice .  Pretty much as I thought really. Nothing can beat a King Prawn Puri followed by Chicken Dansak, rounded off with both orange segments and After Eights .
