What’s been the progress of the seeds from day 8 through to day 14 ?
By the end of the 1st week all 10 varieties and 43 of the original 50 seeds had germinated.
During the 2nd week those that were up continued to grow and a couple more seedlings emerged.
I needed to water them a couple of times. The peat pellets dried out more whereas the pots covered with a layer of vermiculite kept moist for longer. I poured the water into a roasting tray and sat the pots and containers in that to absorb from the bottom up. I also remembered to warm the water in the sun beforehand to make sure it was tepid rather than cold from the tap.
Towards the end of the week I decided not to cover the seedlings with the propagator lid at night and when all seemed fine also decided it was time to prick out those seedlings which had been sown 5 to a 10cm flowerpot into more roomy accommodation.
I will write a future post on what I’ve researched and learnt about the how’s and when’s of pricking out but I know that part of the process is meant to be the weeding out of the weaker seedlings. I wasn’t too good at this. I planted 5 seeds each in the 4 pots and I now have:
- 2 Alicante
- 4 Carbon
- 5 Sungold
- 4 Tigerella
I have left some with two in the original pots and have moved others to individual pots sized 7.6cm and 10cm. However an error I’ve made is they’re still in seed compost which only has enough nutrients for 2-3 weeks from sowing which means moving them again, into more suitable compost and I know it’s not good to keep disturbing them.
I have left the peat pellets for now so will put them in pots with the correct compost in the next few days.
So apart from the seeds which didn’t germinate I haven’t lost any yet apart from the couple I ‘weeded’ out. This coming week will be a thrive to survive week!
