Tomatoes 2010. Week 11.

by Sally on June 7, 2010

Sun, rain. A meterological pick ‘n’ mix.  But the tomatoes seem to be thriving. Flowers are open on 14 plants. Balconi, Mini-Belle, Conchita, Black Cherry, Tigerella and Gardeners Delight are now on floral parade.

The lefthand side of the garden still has an air of desolation but not for much longer. Reinforcements are on their way: 4 beefy Italians and 3, 2nd chance Elegance.

The Italians are a  foray into ‘designer’ tomatoes. There’s a plumvariety ‘San Marzano Astro F1‘ and a beefsteak ‘Pomona F1. Their price is designer, £2.49 per plant and they hail from the (green) House of Seeds of Italy.  Nice looking plants that seem keen to get going.

The Elegance replace the 1 grafted plant which didn’t take. They arrived in less high tech packaging than the initial order (brown box/poly bag) but once out and potted up they’re showing every sign of wanting to make up for lost time.

Which leaves the propagator sown seeds – are they making up time or just lost ? I’m pleased to say they seem to be growing. I’ve now taken to leaving them in the growhouse; the zip has broken so it’s a little open to the elements but I decided that the extra warmth might be key to stoking a little fire under them.

So all in all, a good, corner turning sort of a week.
