Today was the weekly tie-in, pinch out and truss count. Nearly all have been making the most of the sun and putting on growth. If a plant had 3 trusses last week, it’s now got 4. If 1 truss had turned from flower to fruit now 2 have.
The most truss I have on 1 plant is Tigerella with 7 and next the Gardener’s Delight with 6. Both 1 up from last week. I have in my head I’ll stop them next week so even though they probably should be done now I want to wait that extra week. Not because I think it will bring extra tomatoes but more because stopping is more than just stopping if you see what I mean . It’s an acknowledgement summer won’t go on forever.
There was a hint of that today – it was very still, no sun and rather than the ever present pervasiveness of the weekend bbq – there was a drift of bonfire on the air. And I didn’t care for it one bit !
One thing I did notice which I didn’t seem to have any trouble with last year are blackfly. They seem to like some varieties more than others. The determinate San Marzano have got more than their fair share.
And then and I don’t know how I’ve managed to contain myself and wait till the end of this post to show it off – my first blushing tomato of the year. On the bottom truss of one of the Gardeners Delight hangs this …..
I didn’t so well with Gardeners Delight last year and it was only because I continually saw it rated by so many growers as their favourite that when I came across some plants for sale I thought I should give it another go….and now how glad am I that I did !!

Wow, your plants are really reaching for the sky! Congratulations on your first ripening tomato; I should send you a ‘first tomato’ card!
Gardener’s Delight is well worthy of its name IMO, a good cropper and the first to ripen for me and with an excellent sweet flavour. I picked the first of mine from The Clone tonight, two tiny and two larger fruits; one was split but it tasted wonderful.
It’s noticeably cooler here now, with rain in the air. I guess that means Great Britain hasn’t been towed to the Med after all!
Congratulations on the Clones’s quads ! I like the idea of a ‘first tomato card’ As I do the idea of being towed to the Med !
