Tomatoes 2010. Week 17.

by Sally on July 19, 2010

Last week was good – the first pick of the year. Hopefully if this week is hot and sunny the big move to ripening will begin in earnest.

This week will also be the week I need to carry out operation STOP….. I love seeing more flowers, more trusses come through. But as ultimately it’s tomatoes I’m after then the growing has to be brought to a halt. One quick pinch and it’s all over – painless but final ! In addition to which some varieties are outgrowing their canes -I’m looking at you Black Cherry – or rather squinting skywards at you as you make off over the top of the fence.

I see your plants are considering colonising your neighbours’ garden. It’s time I stopped mine too; they’re pushing up against the poly-shelter. We’d all love a
tomato tree like this one in China
in our gardens, but it just ain’t gonna happen here. :-)

5,000 kgs of tomatoes !! That’s one highly productive tomato – it looks so pretty as well.
My plants are having a looking over the fence – but I can tell them nothing is greener over there – in fact as some very parched turf and a drooping sunflower will testify it’s a bit of a desert ! They are better off where they are – where the bar is open daily, waitress service included !
