Beautiful sunshine today and quite warm at times. The lingerers must be glad they’ve waited.
Missing from today’s photo – the inner circle – the 9 Yellow Balconis and 1 Mini-Belle. Their summer is done, although they made a great last contribution to the weighing in process. Reliable and prolific croppers will be on the end of term report for the Balconis. And the yellow fruit looks and tastes great when roasted. They’ve won me round !
So this week’s harvest came in at an impressive 10kg. I picked a few Beefmasters and Big Boy Hybrids for the first time and picked over 2kg of San Marzano.
So whilst the garden lacks colour – indoors is a riot of tomato filled bowls !

They look fabulous as always; I’m glad you’ve had a bumper crop. It’s a shame to see the plants slowly disappearing from your pictures, but they’ve done you proud.
With lots of green fruits still waiting to colour up, I’m holding out until first frost. Then I’ll pick off everything and think ‘chutney’. There’s often a ‘growth spurt’ at this time of year, so I’m removing many sideshoots. Two ‘Gold Medal’ plants lost branches because the string I used to support their fruits broke away. Lesson – tie the knots properly!
Blight is still at bay here, although my uncovered potato plants have had a few spots on their leaves.
The pickings are great at the moment. It seems like it just getting into its stride ! Which makes it a shame that the curtain will soon come down on 2010!
I agree with holding out for as long as possible ( especially if absence of blight isn’t forcing the issue) – this week is wonderfully sunny. In fact the (few !) remaining leaves look very wilted but I’m providing nil-by-roots ! I’m going for unsplit skins and good flavour!
I’m sure half the secret of gardening (and one I’ve yet to crack) is being able to tie knots properly ! Plenty of time to work thro’ that book of knots over the winter !
