Tough Tomatoes.

by Sally on June 4, 2009

When it comes to my tomatoes I am given to worry. In the beginning it was ‘are they going to germinate ?’  Followed by ‘are they getting enough light ?’  The transition to grow house and the great outdoors was rife with potential hazards to fret over.  Now it’s all about watering and flowers and shortly will be setting and feeding.  And that’s before even opening the dark and forbidding door marked ‘ blight ’.

Then comes a reminder that it’s in a plant’s nature to just get on with growing, no matter what gets thrown at it. It was an observation in the comments section by Nick (see comments June 1st ) about self seeding tomatoes that prompted this and I so thought I’d share my own .

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Black Cherry tomato that was lost for want of a stake. The snapped stem got popped in a glass in the kitchen, a living but not for long, reminder of ‘ this is what happens when ……’.

Its pot meanwhile got unceremoniously dumped in the shady side-return and I didn’t look at it again until I noticed this…..

New Growth. Black Cherry Take 2 !

And then there’s this plant :

Tomato Survivor

Variety unknown.  Sown March 1st, neglected ever since. One of a few seeds I used to try out the propagator but not tracked in my weekly updates. The tomato equivalent of the Osbourne daughter who existed but never appeared on screen.

Ejected from the house to huddle under the eaves before the last frost date and if tomatoes could talk I’m sure it’s first words would be ‘ Call yourself a tomato lover…..’ and yet here it is WITH FLOWERS !

Tomato Flowers

These two are now the 1st plants I check on each morning.  Hope they can survive the attention !

Do you have any ‘ against the odds’ tomatoes ?
