Under Close Guard…

Surrounded !

But who is she ?  Surrounded by staked pots this summery bloom is held captive.  With her cascading white flowers she reminds me of a low rise Rapunzel.  Bought last summer, the plant label got lost somewhere along the way so unless anyone can identify what she is for me – Rapunzel she will remain.

Its habit suggests clematis and it needs something to climb up, so get it a trellis or a wooden tub with a nice obelisk tower to keep it in the middle of your tomatoes. I could be wrong, as I’m more of a nettle and dock man.

The flower looks a bit like mock orange blossom, but not sure what their leaves are like. Is it scented?

I like the idea of an Obelisk Tower – it’s inkeeping with the rapunzel theme !

Have just been to take a deep sniff ! It does smell when you put your nose into the petals ! It might be a bit orange like – or a bit jasmine like. Nice !!!

Think Jane is right. Found a pic. of mock orange and the leaves look similar. Any experts out there?

Brilliant detective work. Did some searching following the mock orange clue and came across ‘Philadelphus Snowbelle’ which as soon as I read it I recalled as being the name. And the description also rang true ‘ ratty looking most of the year but saved from the garden axe by beautiful, double fragrant blooms in May and June ‘.
So thank you both for your help – and if you are looking for an addition to your gardens it’s a nice plant to have.

I’m so glad you’ve identified it. I noticed some in next door’s garden this morning – a huge bush (almost a tree) so it’s obviously a different variety and it smelled gorgeous. I’m going to pinch some tonight for the house!

Just revisited to see how the identification has gone. Well done, Jane – a woman who knows her flowers! And I was just getting excited by the obelisk…. sigh.

I’m glad you’re impressed with my plant knowledge. I think your obelisk idea was great and maybe a mini one would still work as the plant looks a bit floppy – definitely looks as if it would benefit from some sort of staking anyway.

It’s the Hampton Court Show coming up soon and a milestone in every new gardener’s initiation must be struggling home from a show with an unwiedly purchase !
