Growing Tomatoes. Week 13.

Tomateau Nouveau

Lucky for some !!

A mixed weather week. A cool, breezy, overcast start, heavy showers mid week, definitely no extra watering required ,warmer and drier towards the end of the week.

I kept tapping the canes of the plants with flowers on, doing my bit for the pollination effort but more in the spirit of keeping the faith rather than actually having any.

The varieties sown on the 16th March now with flowers are Tumbler which bloomed first, followed by Sungold, Moneymaker and just showing through, Red Robin and Tigerella.

However at the end of the week when looking at the Cream Sausage ( bought along with Darby Stripe from the NVS) I got such a start, I jumped back nearly crushing the poor Snowbelle. The cause of my shock – a small green tomato and another and another. 3 tiny tomatoes. I felt like laughing, crying and picking them ! But instead took a picture; for you to see and proof for myself that this wasn’t all a dream !

The woodpecker will have nothing on me when it comes to tap, tap, tapping from now on in !

Week 12 Summary.

Plants: All growing fast, some needed tieing twice this week.

Watering: A mixture of me, the tap and the watering can and then the rain clouds taking over mid week.

Flowers: The Tumblers are producing the most and the Sungolds next.

Feeding: Used Multipurpose feed once this week.

And how are other tomato growers getting on ?

My Island Garden and Down on the allotment both proudly presented their 1st summer tomatoes of 2009.  And then just when we thought we all knew which direction we were heading in – Summer !  Time to mix things up by popping down to Melbourne where Totally Inept Balcony Gardener is having to grow tomatoes indoors because….. it’s winter !

Your plants are looking wonderful! Looks like you are having huge success and will have a really large crop this year. Congrats!

Most of my tomato plants are looking a little tall and spindly (due to lack of sunlight, I believe) but the container ones seem to be doing well. Lots of flowers and a few small green cherry tomatoes. The other veggies seem to be doing fairly well so far. (I posted a little update the other day with some pics if you want to take a peek)

Hello Erin,
Thanks for getting in touch. I headed over to thirtysomethingblog.com to have a look at your plants. They are looking good. I love that reward of seeing something you planted grow and grow ! All you need to do now is keep the deer out !
