I’m lucky enough to be not far from Wisley. A while ago, post surgery and temporarily restricted to proceeding through life at a shuffle a good friend and Wisley member suggested we soft shoe there and take the air . It was early in the year. Lots of things were still sensibly blanketed under ground but people were out, enjoying the garden, not necessarily to explore but as a place to be, perhaps to be warmed by the fledgling sun, just as you might from your own garden bench.
However it wasn’t until recently I got round to joining. At Hampton Court I put that right (Connie on the RHS stand being a glowing embodiment of the body and soul benefits of gardening).
And so for those times when I want a less tomato centric garden experience I now have an additional patch to enjoy.
Which didn’t stop me from making my first port of call tomatoes. I found them in the growing garden and in Model Garden.
Here’s what’s in the polytunnel of the growing garden:
There are two rows of tomato plants down one side, probably 24 plants in total. On the other side: peppers, chillies and aubergine. The varieties: Tomatillos, Tigerella, Olivade, Harlequin, Gold Nugget, Gardeners Delight, Brandywine and Black Cherry.
The leaves of the plants looked quite ropy. But there was lots of fruit.
My leaves look lovely. I don’t have nearly as much fruit.
A tomato conundrum to get to grips with !
